AES Corporation (“AES”) is one of the largest private investors in the electrical sector in the Dominican Republic, with an investment of over US$800 millions, and one of the largest private investors in the energy sector in Latin America.
AES began its investments in the DR with the acquisition of Dominican Power Partners (“DPP”) in 1997, and expanded its operations with the construction of AES Andres (“Andres”) in 2003.
In May 2006, AES, through its subsidiary AES Grand Itabo, acquired El Paso Energy’ shares in Empresa Generadora de Electricidad de Itabo (“Itabo”), equivalent to 24.99%, and with the AES Gener, (subsidiary of AES) portion of 25.02%, gave it total control of this company´s private shares. The remaining 50% of the shares are owned by the Dominican State (49.97%) and by former workers of the company (0.03%). On August 7th, 2008, Coastal Itabo Ltd. and its affiliates, an AES Subsidiary, purchased from AES Gener, S. A. and affiliate companies (“AES Gener”) all its interests in Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Itabo, S.A. (“EGE Itabo”) and New Caribbean Investment, S.A. (“NCI”), which manages and operates Itabo under a Management Agreement. As of the aforementioned date, Coastal Itabo own 50.0% of all outstanding shares of EGE Itabo (the other 50% is owned by FONPER and the ex-employees) and 100% of the outstanding shares of NCI.
Andres, DPP, and Itabo own and operate generation units with an effective capacity of 800 MW.
Andres has the only terminal in this country for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) reception. Itabo has the only dock in the Dominican Republic for unloading solid fuels, and has the capacity to receive Panamax type ships with up to 65,000 MT of solids.
