It functions based on the energy transactions as they occur as the difference between total energy dispatched by the generators in economic dispatch and the energy actually demanded according to the contracts. Likewise, the spot market is also composed of firm power transactions determined by the Coordinator Entity.

The spot price is calculated every hour based on the Short Term Marginal Cost, which is defined by the variable production cost of the last generation unit that was dispatched to attend 1 additional kWh. If the system is under rationing, the marginal cost is set by the Superintendence as the cost of energy not served.
